Poinsettias are a Christmas classic! With their vibrant colors and lush foliage, they’ve become a staple of holiday décor. Originally native to Mexico, poinsettias were introduced to the United States in the 1820s by botanist Joel Roberts Poinsett. Since then, they’ve grown in popularity, finding a place in homes and traditions around the world. Today, our greenhouse features poinsettias in a wide range of colors, from classic reds and snowy whites to delicate pinks and even variegated varieties. Whether you’re looking for a large statement plant or a petite tabletop option, we have multiple sizes and varieties to choose from.
To keep your poinsettia looking its best, start with the right light. Place it in a well-lit spot where it receives bright, indirect sunlight for about 6 hours each day. If natural light is limited, consider supplementing with a fluorescent lamp to ensure it’s getting the brightness it needs. Avoid placing poinsettias near windows with direct midday sun, as too much light can fade the leaves.
Poinsettias are sensitive to temperature changes and prefer a stable environment. They thrive in temperatures between 60-70°F. Keep them away from cold drafts, heat vents, and fireplaces. If the air in your home is dry, especially in winter, placing a humidifier nearby can help keep your poinsettia looking fresh.
During the blooming season, your poinsettia doesn’t need fertilizer. However, if you’d like to keep it as a houseplant after the holidays, a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer applied once a month can help it continue growing.
Poinsettias have become symbolic of Christmas, thanks to their vivid color and seasonal availability. In Mexican tradition, poinsettias are known as “Flores de Noche Buena,” or “Flowers of the Holy Night,” and are said to symbolize the holiday spirit and giving. Decorating with poinsettias brings a sense of warmth and festivity, making them a beautiful choice for any home.
Explore our greenhouse selection to find a poinsettia that fits your space and style. With unique colors and variegated options, there’s something to suit every holiday décor. Visit us for tips on how to care for and keep these beautiful plants fresh throughout the season!
