Whether you’re planting them in the ground or keeping them in pots, proper care is key to ensuring they thrive throughout the season. Here’s a guide to help you water and maintain your mums, whether they’re planted in your garden or displayed on your porch.

Watering Mums in Pots

Mums in pots tend to dry out faster than those in the ground, so it’s important to monitor their moisture levels daily. Check the top inch of soil and water when it feels dry. Pots should have proper drainage to prevent water from pooling at the bottom, as soggy roots can cause the plant to rot.

When watering potted mums, do so until water runs out of the bottom drainage holes. Be careful not to let the pot sit in excess water, which can damage the roots. Mums in containers need consistent moisture, but overwatering can lead to root rot, so aim for balanced, even watering.

General Care Tips for Mums

  • Sunlight: Mums thrive in full sun, needing at least 6 hours of direct light each day. In pots, position them in a sunny spot, and in the ground, choose a location that gets plenty of sun.
  • Mulching: For mums planted in the ground, apply a layer of mulch around the base. This helps the soil retain moisture and keeps the roots cool. Avoid placing mulch too close to the plant’s stem to prevent rot.

  • Deadheading: To keep mums looking fresh and encourage more blooms, remove faded flowers (deadhead) regularly. By doing this simple task, you can help extend the flowering period of your mum.
  • Fertilizing: Mums in the ground typically don’t need much fertilizer during their blooming season, but potted mums benefit from a light, balanced fertilizer every few weeks. Stop fertilizing when the mums start flowering.

By following these simple watering and care tips, your mums will flourish, providing beautiful long lasting color throughout the fall season.  Happy Planting!
